Celebrex, the generic version of Pfizer's blockbuster arthritis drug, has been in early trading in the New York Stock Exchange. But as the FDA's largest drug-store chain has sued the drug maker, a new lawsuit has been filed.
The case is part of a large lawsuit filed by the manufacturer of Celebrex, which manufactures the drug for the painkiller Celebrex.
The lawsuit was filed Friday in New York state court, alleging that Pfizer violated federal law by selling the drug without the approval of the FDA. The suit alleges that Pfizer knew or should have known about the sales by Novartis Inc. and that the drug caused heart attacks and other cardiovascular events, but chose to sell it for its own financial gain.
The lawsuit alleges that Pfizer knew or should have known of the drug's sales in the first place until the end of 2011, when it was revealed that Celebrex had been prescribed to patients with heart disease, as well as stroke, liver disease, and high blood pressure.
Celebrex's alleged conduct "has caused serious harm to patients and their families," said the suit.
It says that Celebrex's makers failed to adequately disclose the potential risks associated with its drug and failed to adequately warn users about the drug's effects.
The lawsuit claims that Pfizer's drug failed to adequately warn doctors and patients about the risk of serious heart-related side effects. It also says that Pfizer failed to adequately warn consumers and patients about the risks associated with taking Celebrex.
According to the suit, the Celebrex maker failed to disclose the risk of heart attack and stroke. The company is also seeking to have the case referred to the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for approval of the drug.
