Pfizer Inc. has sued generic drug maker Eli Lilly & Company over the patent for the arthritis drug Celebrex, saying the company’s approach to treating pain and inflammation is inadequate.

“This FDA approval is a significant step towards addressing the risks of using drugs like Celebrex to treat pain and inflammation,” the suit alleges.
According to the suit, the FDA approved the drug for arthritis in April 2011.
The suit alleges that Pfizer failed to adequately disclose the generic Celebrex to the FDA at the time of the patent expiration.

A recent Canadian survey indicated that there is a lot of debate about whether and how celebrex should be prescribed for patients suffering from arthritis.
The Canadian study reported on the effects of celecoxib on patients suffering from osteoarthritis. The study was conducted by researchers at the Montreal Neurological Institute in Canada, in collaboration with Canadian researchers in the U. S. and Europe.
